US offers $18.5 mln for food security, agriculture, environment

PHNOM PENH, 20 September 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - The United States will amend an agreement with Cambodia Friday to provide $18.5 million in aid for agriculture, food security and climate change, the US Embassy said.

A statement said the amendment to the USAID program agreement would be signed by US Charge d'Affaires Jeff Daigle and Cabinet Minister Sok An.

Programs funded under the agreement include the Helping Address Rural Vulnerabilities and Ecosystem Stability (HARVEST) project, the statement said.

This and other programs are aimed at "enhancing agricultural production, developing post-harvest management capacity, increasing access to food, and helping Cambodian farmers adapt to climate change.

"These programs will also strengthen the ability of civil society, the private sector, and the government to address food security and climate change challenges in Cambodia."

Combined with health, education, democracy, governance and human trafficking programs, USAID expects to provide $65 million in aid to Cambodia in 2012, the statement said.
