A train and a cement truck collided in Kampot province yesterday, leaving both badly damaged, police said.

Banteay Meas district traffic police deputy chief Min Nheb said no one was injured in the crash, which took place near Prey Taproek village in Sdech Kong Kang Lech commune

“According to our assessment and eyewitness accounts, the accident was caused by the truck driver, who was transporting dozens of tonnes of cement for a company in Kampot province,” Nheb said, adding that the driver had been making an attempt to cross the tracks before the train passed.

Nheb said the truck driver fled the scene of the accident and that Royal Railways had filed a complaint against the owner’s company demanding $600,000.

Nheb said he could not confirm the name of the company, though the truck was marked with the name Shi Mao Trading Co.

A man who answered a phone call to a number provided for the truck’s owner said he was not prepared to give comment.

While the train has since been moved to Touk Mean substation, the truck remained stuck on the tracks, according to Nheb, who said that there was not a crane powerful enough in the province to move it.

In March, a man narrowly escaped death when he ploughed his moto headlong into a train, also in Kampot’s Banteay Meas district.
