PHNOM PENH, 23rd July 2013 (The Cambodia Herald) -- Sam Rainsy has
sent a letter to the National Assembly chairman, Heng Samrin, asking for
parliamentary immunity and his privileges to be restored.
“According
to article 15 of statutory law, any convicted lawmakers will receive
restored immunity, privileges and validity after receiving a royal
pardon from King”, said the letter issued Tuesday by Sam Rainsy.
“I
ask the National Assembly Chairman to examine and give his decision to
grant my immunity and privileges in order to let me fulfil my duty as a
lawmaker”, the letter said.
Sam Rainsy, Cambodia National Rescue
Party (CNRP) leader who is seen the main challenger to Prime Minister
Hun Sen, returned from exile on Friday of last week.
Rainsy was welcomed and greeted by thousands of supporters after his return.
He
failed to register and run as a parliamentary candidate in Kandal
province against Hun Sen after the National Election Committee (NEC)
denied his request yesterday. He was seeking reinstatement in the voters
list for this weekend’s poll.
He is currently campaigning with
Kem Sokha, acting president of CNRP, in what is seen as the main
provinces in Cambodia, before the general election on July 28.
